The point of all of this is that you get a bunch of skeptical King of the Universe Type A personalities together in a room, and through the magic of a cultish tomb and some deep personal sharing, everyone bonds. Other societies have it too - Wolf's Head is obsessed with Egypt, for instance. The obsession with death and skulls and human remains are all a way to force group bonding. Most people enter Skull and Bones thinking it's going to be lame and they're going to learn all about it, expose the secret inner workings of it, and then go back to their friends and chuckle about how lame it is. Since, after all, that's what you wanted to hear. Sorry - let me tell you some interesting details about Bones then. The rest of the conspiracy smog is a combination of the natural over-exaggerated imaginations of those trying to view things from the outside, on the one hand, and on the other the all-too-real, but normal & everyday conspiring that people with power & influence have always engaged in when they want to help their friends out. The over-dramatic ritualistic aspects of S&B are mainly about bonding disparate students together quickly and in a way that might still be honored over the long-term. That seems to be what WhisperAgain is trying to say. The trick is to create a strong enough bond that it actually holds-up over the years. But because this is Yale we're talking about, this old-boys network quite naturally becomes both high-level and wide-ranging over time. That's really what most of the old-boys clubs were about anyway-networking and success-bonding. I think WhisperAgain is just saying what is almost certainly the real truth: that some time ago a handful of bright young guys at Yale realized, "Hey, since we Yale grads are already pre-selected for the fast-track to Western-Corporate success, wouldn't it be smart to establish a life-long bond among a few of us and agree that we'll always try to help each other out in the future?"
